Lures: a comprehensive guide (2024)

Hello everyone, im bringing a guide for the new items introduced on the holiday update 2022 (Sorry for the bad english). So lets start with the basic.

Lures: a comprehensive guide (1) Lures: a comprehensive guide (2) Lures: a comprehensive guide (3)What are Lures?Lures: a comprehensive guide (4)Lures: a comprehensive guide (5)Lures: a comprehensive guide (6)

Lures are a single use item, similar to repels, they are only active for a limited amount of steps, and the effects are different depending on the type of lure: Normal or Premium.

Normal Lures

The normal lures (Lures: a comprehensive guide (7)Lures: a comprehensive guide (8)Lures: a comprehensive guide (9)) can be adquired from the pokemart or the marketplace, there are three different types of normal lures: Basic, Super and Expert. All three offer the same effects, the only difference is their price and the number of steps (being 100, 200 and 250 respectively). The effects are the following:

  • The normal lures give you a 10% increase of wild pokemon encounter while walking, surfing or fishing.
    • The lure doesnt work if you are using sweet scent for wild encounters.
  • The pokemon are a bit stronger, having 1 or 3 levels more than usual.
  • You can encounter a wild double battle while the lure is active
    • Because Unova already has wild double battles due to Dark grass. You now can find this types of wild battles on normal grass too, but only if the lure is active.
    • If only one pokemon remains from the double wild encounter, the last pokemon has a very slim chance to call another pokemon for help, similiar to SOS battles from gen 7 (Thanks toSacredDiver for the discovery).
  • You can find rare species if the lure is active.
    • Some species are exclusive with lure, having a 5% to encounter a lure-exclusive pokemon.
    • The lure-exclusive pokemon are:
      • BulbasaurLures: a comprehensive guide (10)

Premium Lures

The premium lures (Lures: a comprehensive guide (44) Lures: a comprehensive guide (45) Lures: a comprehensive guide (46)) can be adquired from the gift shop or the marketplace, there are three different types of premium lures: Basic, Super and Max. Just like the normal lures, all three offer the same effects, the only difference is their price and the number of steps (being 200, 300 and 400 respectively). The effects are the following:

  • They have all the effects of normal lures, but with some differences:
    • 20% increase of wild pokemon encounter instead of 10%
    • 8% to encounter a lure-exclusive pokemon instead of 5%
  • You can encounter a bigger horde, this means that instead of a horde of 3 pokemon, with premium lure you can find a horde of 5.
    • This only applies if you are walking or surfing, it doesnt work with sweet scent.
  • Premium lures can increase the chance of secret shiny pokemon by 25%
    • However, it doesnt increase the chance of regular shiny.

Mechanics/Features/Bugs?

The following observations im not quite sure if was intended or not, but this are the things that i noticed:

  • You can stack the lure with repels, having both effects active at the same time
    • However, the repel effect takes priority, meaning that the lure step will only start counting if the repel effect is over
    • If you use a repel after using the lure, the repel will be consumed first, and the lure will pause, until the repel is over
    • But for some reason, if you use a repel first and the the lure, the repel will start counting but not the lure, as was stated before. However, you can still find pokemon while the repel is still in effect, but they dont have the bonus levels or the exclusive encounters from the lure.
  • The lure stack with the safari steps.
    • You cant find double wild encounter while using a lure in the safari.
    • Both the lure and the safari steps are consumed at the same time, unlike the lure with repels.
    • It seems that the lure-encounter pokemon on the safari are much easier to capture, because they dont run away easily.
      • I did a test with Blissey, and the pokemon didnt run away after just one turn, it did after 8-15 turns of just throwing safari balls. This ended up happening after trying several times.
  • The lure works with fishing encounters.
    • You can find double wild encounters while fishing.
    • Everytime you use the fishing rod, you consume 5 steps from the lure.
      • This means that depending of the lure, you can use the fishing rod 20-80 times with a single lure.
    • When you are fishing and the lure is active, the level of the pokemon will be the highest from that area plus the extra levels from the lure
      • A test was done on dragonspiral tower, where you can find Dratini between level 25-40 and Basculin between level 35-55, when the lure was active, Dratini only appeared at level 56, that means that Dratini is taking the highest level of the stronger pokemon from that area (in this case Basculin), and using that level for the lure. Currently this only happens while fishing. (Thanks topokemonmaster69 for the discovery)
    • You can also find lure-exclusive pokemon from fishing just like when surfing (Thanks topokemonmaster69 andSacredDiver for the info).
  • The lure works with rock smash encounters (Thanks toSacredDiver for the info)
    • The pokemon get higher levels if the lure is active.
    • Using rock smash doesnt consume lure steps like when you use the fishing rod.
    • You can find a double wild encounter when using rock smash.
